Day 4: DIY PRODUCE BAGS!

  • Homemade

  • Conscious of Environmental Impact

  • Could be Female Owned ;)

On the fourth day of Christmas:

I’m all about supporting small businesses, but when you can DIY a gift I think that’s even better! While visiting my parents this summer I found some old fabric and made a handful of produce bags to gift to my family and a few new ones for my bulk shopping endeavours.

Before you think DIY or sewing and run away, please know that I am by no means an avid sewer. My expertise goes back to I Gr. 11 Fashion class which I took to learn ways to mend the clothing I bought at thrift stores. Basically I wanted to learn how to get a sewing machine to work! But I assure you this is a super simple process and involves about 3 sections of straight sewing! Their are so many available tutorials online so I have linked one here that is super straight-forward and detailed!

Grocery Bags are a key item for a pantry and go far beyond the produce aisle, or even the grocery store! I use my bags for all sorts of things where I would otherwise have used plastic! They are great for travel, storing food in your fridge and packing your lunch! I was recently gifted a few new bags from my friend Erika and was so pleased to receive a gift that is so practical that I use all the time!

When purchased in a store or online they can be pricey and plain! But when you can DIY it and make them with unique fabrics, it’s just so much better! If you are into sewing, you should get to it right away and if not I encourage you to try! You can find a friend with a sewing machine, go to a share library or even just do it by hand with a good old needle and thread!

This is one of the gifts my friends and family will be receiving this year! I am making big sacks to replace wrapping paper (much to my families chagrin) but it’s a great way to reduce your Christmas waste and also so fun to have personalized bags for any goodies you may get!

Happy Sewing!
