12 Days To a Clean Christmas: Day 11

12 Days to a Clean Christmas (4).png

Day 11:

  • Handmade

  • Conscious of Environmental Impact

  • Support a Local Business

On the eleventh day of Christmas….

Of course we couldn't get through the 12 days of Christmas without a gift for health! Homemade gifts are so much fun and I love the idea of getting to save economically and on waste when preparing gifts!

These homemade gifts are ideal for hosts/hostess, office exchanges and stocking stuffers! They have a long shelf life and are packed with all sorts of good stuff!

Fermented vegetables are a great source of probiotics and so are excellent for gut health! They add flavour to all sorts of dishes and can be the perfect addition to holiday platters and grazing boards.

Check out my recipe for sauerkraut and pickled onion- you can switch this one up with all sorts of vegetables!

You can easily personalize this gift with jars and labels! This makes for a perfect gift for those who love to cook or those who are looking to get in the kitchen more!

Day 10: Homemade Spice Kits

12 Days to a Clean Christmas (5).png

Day 10: DIY Spices

  • Handmade

  • Support a Local Business (find a local low waste grocery store)

On the tenth day of Christmas….

This isn’t my first Christmas giving out these little spice kits- I think they are the perfect way to give your Secret Santa something that they can experiment with!

There are a variety of recipes out there but I like to stick to these simple ones from Minimalist Baker. I have used both a Chai Spice Mix and a Curry Powder Mix.

These are both pretty simple I like to add in a little recipe to give your recipient as something to work with! I try to purchase all my spices in bulk to save money, get high quality and reduce the packaging involved! There is something so nice about receiving a gift that is homemade and extremely practical for cooking!

12 Days To a Clean Christmas: Day 9 Craving Curbing Fat Bombs

12 Days to a Clean Christmas (3).png

Day 9: Delicious Desserts to feel good about!

  • Homemade

On the Ninth day of Christmas….

We all know of course that desserts are the most quintessential Christmas gift, for a host, friends, teachers or all your coworkers. Who doesn’t love getting a tin full of all the best cookies! That’s why I just had to include my own take on the classic gifted desserts!

I love a good old gingerbread cookie, or a simple shortbread, but truthfully by the time the holidays near an end I am craving something that has just right the amount of sweetness but also offers me a bit more! These little balls are the perfect combo of both! They have that classic holiday appeal with chocolate and nut butter, yet they pack a punch with all the seeds.

There are a ton of variations on these recipes and you could even go for a Chocolate Peppermint Ball rolled in coconut! I highly recommend scouring the internet and finding the one that fits your needs! They are easy peasy to make, a lot of the ingredients may already be in your pantry and they will fuel your Secret Santa through the final few days of the Holidays!

Bon Appetit!

12 Days To a Clean Christmas: Day 8 Keeping You Toasty From Head to Toe

12 Days to a Clean Christmas (7).jpg

Day 8: Wool Socks to Last A Lifetime and Keep You Toasty

  • Conscious of Environmental Impact

  • Support a Local Business

  • Practical - a new category I created :)

On the eighth day of Christmas….

Living in chilly Canada, whether it’s the snow in Ontario or the Rain in Vancouver, you know how important warm dry socks are! After countless hiking trips, skiing days and just long walks in the winter, I have realized the importance of good wool socks. They keep your feet warm and dry and are a sustainable fibre choice- can you think of anything better to get your secret santa??

I am always keen on purchases that last a long time and wool is definitely one of those options! Here are some of my favourite things about this incredible fibre!

  • Wool is a terrific insulator, but also keeps you cool in the summer

  • Hypoallergenic so great for all those on your list who struggle with bacteria etc

  • Renewable Fibre as Sheep continue to grow their coat

  • Wool naturally breaks down and so has a product lifecycle that won’t end up in our landfills

There are plenty of local stores that sell good quality wool socks and a lot of companies that are making a difference with their purchases. I personally love the quality of both icebreaker and smartwool. I have walked a lot of miles in my wool socks and know they will last for many more! These types of products are something I can feel good about buying!

We all know that socks will most likely end up in everyones stockings, so why not make them a sustainable and long lasting gift? And while you’re at it get yourself a pair too!

Punch Packing Fat Bombs

Do you ever get those creative blocks or a rush of anxiety or stress and you just need to take a break? When that happens to me I usually head to the kitchen, for me it’s cathartic. I am very into tracking my cycle and I was pretty sure that based on the timing of this escape, I was in need of some hormone balancing foods. Instead of reaching for the refined carbs, I keep a few of these little balls in my freezer to enjoy when I’m feeling like a satisfying treat! Don’t get me wrong a salty chip or toast and honey is a lovely treat, but sometimes your body and blood sugar is demanding a little bit more.

I struggle with a lot of recipes that require 200 dates and 3 cups of maple syrup (okay a slight exaggeration). Of course these taste great they are almost pure sugar- which is fine but I wanted to find an alternative to holding these balls together!

I decided on substituting Tahini for dates and syrups which add a nutty taste without the sweetness overload. With the addition of nut butter the consistency worked out well just perfectly! I also add a bit of liquid whether it’s a milk or water, this helps to bind the oats and chia seeds and they naturally hold together!

I begin by placing all the dry ingredients in my food processor. I blend until nice and chopped up but not to adust or flour! I then add the Nut Butter, Tahini and a bit of liquid and blend. This is when I test the consistency and if they will stick together and hold their shape. You can either add more dry if they are too sticky or Tahini/Nut Butter if they are not sticking well. Keep playing around and they will work out great!

I keep mine in the freezer for a few weeks for the onset of a craving!

Ingredients

Seeds: Sunflower, Flax, Pumpkin, Chia, Sesame (white+black), (1-2) tbsp each

1/2 Cup Peanut Butter

2-3 Tbsp Tahini

1 1/2 cups Rolled Oats

Cocoa Powder

A Few Tbsp Almond Milk

Chocolate Chips (optional)

2 Tsp Cinnamon

5 Tips To Packing Air Travel Meals

IMG_20190819_133220 (3).jpg

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas, the visions of busy airports are dancing in my head. For many of us Christmas means a season of travel. Whether you are off on a sunny vacation to Hawaii or like me, a trip to the Great White North of Ontario, airport travel can be hectic.

To reduce my struggle with unexpected delays and missed connections, I pack all my meals. This saves money on expensive airport food, helps to clean out my fridge when I am leaving for a period of time and also helps reduce the waste we see on so many planes! I also love that it helps to keep me feeling fuelled and ready for travel days. Our bodies already struggle with the changes of travel and so it’s best to support with foods that fill you in the right way! I always pack my lunches with hydrating beverages, fibre rich foods and satiating fats and proteins! Packing your own meals means not being stuck eating foods that leave you feeling bloated, lethargic and parched!

Here are my Top 5 Tips to keep your travel food airport ready!

  1. Waste: I love to have 1 nice set of cutlery I carry with me throughout travel. I chose this bamboo set that is lightweight and easy to clean. I wrap this with an elastic band in a cloth napkin and voila it’s an affordable and chic travel kit! I also pack my food into recyclable containers. I prefer to not have to lug tupperware with me throughout the trip so I opt to recycle when I land! I also have a nice mug that I use for all my hot beverages while on the plane and for elixirs while waiting in the airport. I simply ask a coffee shop for a bit of hot water! I also pack all my tea bags, fruits and odd and ends into a cloth grocery bag that keeps everything together when going through security!

  2. Liquid: I don’t know about you but the most anxiety I get at security is always what’s in my lunch. I have had so many encounters around dips, yogurts, salads and dressings that I have now determined the foolproof way to travel with these items. Whenever I buy something that is in a jar labelled under 100ml (capers, sundried tomatoes etc) I save them and pack any liquid like substances into them! That way it’s easy for anyone at security to verify and send you on your way! I usually bring a powdered Elixir blend such as my Adaptogen Mylk Latte from Organika . Or a mix of dandy blend, cocoa and some cinnamon which just needs water and a bit of milk from the coffee bar added!

  3. Where Are you going? Borders/Customs, what are you restricted from travelling with? Remember that International and Domestic Travel have different regulations which means your meal may have to look a bit different! Even if you can’t bring your typical citrus salad, there is still opportunity to buy the bare basics and bring your own customizable items. For example I will buy one of the small yogurts and bring rolled oats, dried nuts and seeds and add a bit of hot water once I pass through security! It’s fun to be a bit creative!

  4. Fibre Rich Foods: It’s no surprise that air travel can slow things down a bit in the digestion department and that’s where fibre rich foods come in handy! Its important on travel days to pack your meals with some soluble and insoluble fibres! With breakfast you can do oats with some nuts, seeds and dried fruit! Lunch can be a kale salad with a sunflower dressing and crispy tempeh. Dinner can include a noodle bowl with zucchini noodles and lots of raw veg! By avoiding high starch foods and refined carbohydrates you can assist your body in keeping things flowing!

  5. Hydration: Flying and stale air leave you feeling very dehydrated and so I always pack a few Nuun tablets, elixir blends, and a variety of herbal teas. Be sure to bring a cup that is good for hot + cold and then you can fill it as you need! These things will keep you hydrated throughout your trip and even help with jet lag!

I hope some of these tips can make for hppy and safe travelling this Holiday season!

12 Days To a Clean Christmas: Day 7 Support a Local Artist

12 Days to a Clean Christmas (8).jpg

Day 7: Support a Local Artist

  • Handmade

  • Conscious of Environmental Impact

  • Support a Local Business

On the seventh day of Christmas….

While creating this list I reached out to a few of my friends to get some inspiration for what they consider to be Clean Christmas Gifts. My friend Carrie suggested local artists and I couldn’t help but think how brilliant this was for hitting so many categories, and who doesn’t love some type of artwork for Christmas?

Whether it’s a simple postcard, a handmade ceramic mug or a unique print, local artists have incredible talent that is ideal for any Christmas List!

I love these prints from @anjajane because they are local to Vancouver and make perfect gifts for my friends far away! There is also something so incredible about getting to interact with the artist you are buying from! When I bought my first print from Anja two years ago I couldn’t find the specific print in any stores and so I met her at home to get a print directly from the source! This instantly gave me a connection to her artwork and made me so proud that it was a local Vancouver piece!

Keegan my good friend from home, makes the most incredible leather goods! Two years ago I bought Jamie a gorgeous wallet that he continues to use and love! Check out his work here

Julia is about the sweetest person you will ever meet and she creates gorgeous prints of the local flora + fauna of Coastal BC, but also the beauty from the back alleys of East Van, which I love the most! Check out her work here!

If you look at around at Craft Sales or even just through your instagram feed, you will find friends and businesses that are creating incredible pieces that may just make the perfect Christmas gift!

12 Days To a Clean Christmas: Day 6 Plant The Love

12 Days to a Clean Christmas (6).jpg

Day 6: Plant Propagations

  • Homemade

  • Conscious of Environmental Impact

On the sixth day of Christmas…

If you’ve been to my apartment than you will know that we LOVE PLANTS. Our space isn’t huge but since we don’t have outdoor space we bring the outdoors in with all our plant dreams! When I discovered plant propagation I was pretty ecstatic. I mean you pay for one plant and get all sorts of free babies! Of course certain plants propagate better than others but most house plants do a pretty awesome job of reproducing!

Some of my favourite propagators are:

Snake Plants

Spider Plants

Rubber Plants

These guys are pretty self sufficient, you can either cut off a section and place them in water or directly into fresh soil! Hilton Carter has some awesome videos and tutorials on how to propagate! It takes time but these will be the perfect gift for anyone on your list! Not only is this a homemade gift, it’s also the gift that keeps on giving! Plants if cared for, have a very long life and are known for being incredible air purifiers!

You could make this even more unique by finding a fun container such as a ceramic mug, a thrifted pot or I have even done propagations into cute little Italian tomato sauce tins! Just be sure to put a few stones in the bottom of your pot for drainage!

Happy Planting :)

Quick Weeknight Meal: Nuts for Soba Noodle Bowl

00100dPORTRAIT_00100_BURST20191206135948849_COVER (1).jpg

If you follow me on instagram than you’re familiar with this recipe I made on my stories last week! I just finished off the last of it tonight and it was still just as delicious! This big bowl of goodness is packed with fibre, protein and so much flavour! It’s also a really quick meal that when you’re pantry is stocked- is so easy to make in a pinch!

I love the creaminess with the combination of Buckwheat Noodles and the crunchiness of the veg!

Sauce

Garlic cloves, 2-3 Tbsp Nut Butter, Handful of Cilantro, Fresh Lime Juice (2 limes), thumb size fresh ginger, Hot Pepper/Sriracha

Ingredients

Edadame

Soba Noodles

Carrots

Zucchini

Cilantro

Any other veg you may want to add or substitute

Firm Tofu

Toasted Sesame Oil

I first wrap my drained tofu in a clean tea towel and use something heavy to press it. I usually cut my tofu in half lengthwise to help drain the water. I add all the sauce ingredients to my blender and thin with water as needed. I do tasting throughout and add more nuts, salt water depending on how you like it! You want this to be creamy but not too thick, it needs to spread through all your noodles!

Once I finish the dressing I put two pots on to boil, 1 for the noodles and 1 for edamame (or you can double up to save on dishes). I then use my mandolin to slice the veggies and spiralize the zucchini noodles. If you don’t have a spiralizer/mandolin no problem you can simply chop the vegetables normally and use a vegetable peeler to pull nice long ribbons of zucchini and carrots! Here are links to my favourite affordable spiralizer and mandolin both from oxo. There are definitely better ones out there but I like these as an affordable option for a home cook!

I place all vegetables in a big bowl together and add the cooked edamame (follow package instructions but don’t overcook). Once the noodles are cooked I rinse with cold water and drizzle a small amount of sesame oil (it’s very strong so only needs a teensy bit). I then add to the vegetable mix and mix in the sauce.

While that’s marinading I cook the tofu in a bit of oil in a non stick pan. I add salt + pep, Tamari and some sesame seeds and flip once until brown and slightly crispy. I place this on the top of each individual serving add watercress and sesame seeds to each plate. This keeps well in the fridge, you can also opt to keep sauce separate to avoid soggy noodles! Great for a lunch- you just place noodles and zoodles in bottom, add veg and bring sauce on the side! Looks beautiful too :)

12 Days To a Clean Christmas: Day 5 The Best Kind of Warm Glow

12 Days to a Clean Christmas (5).jpg

Day 5: Beeswax Candles

  • Homemade (if you choose)

  • Conscious of Environmental Impact

  • Find a Small Business to support!

On the fifth day of Christmas:

Now candles are by no means equivalent to 5 golden rings, but they have some pretty redeeming qualities!

A few key reasons I love Beeswax Candles:

  • They don’t contain the nasty synthetic fragrances and chemicals of conventional candles (aside from naturally scented ones of course)

  • They are said to have negative ions which neutralize pollutants in your environment

  • They give off the most beautiful glow and burn longer and brighter than conventional candles

  • They have this really nice neutral smell that fills up any space they are burning in

I don’t know about you but I absolutely LOVE the glow of a candle. Whether it’s a small tea light or a naturally scented pillar candle, it makes the holiday season, and winter in general that much warmer! When hosting parties and having friends over I love lighting tea-lights throughout my apartment, but I won’t lie that in the last few months the impact of that bulk bag of tea-lights from ikea has started to creep up on me. Every time I go to throw out or ‘recycle’ those little tins, I feel a tinge of remorse. That’s where these adorable little beeswax votives saved the day. i found them while at a craft show this fall and absolutely love that they are waste free, toxin free and give off the most lovely neutral scent!

This could be a perfect purchase from a small business or a DIY gift. Here in Vancouver you can get beeswax from the Soap Dispensary and make your own beeswax candles! Here is a great link to how to make the candles yourself and some more info on beeswax! I purchased all my Beeswax very affordably from this Lower Mainland Company!

This gift will truly warm the hearts of those who receive it ;)

12 Days To a Clean Christmas: Day 4 DIY Grocery Bags!

12 Days to a Clean Christmas (4).jpg

Day 4: DIY PRODUCE BAGS!

  • Homemade

  • Conscious of Environmental Impact

  • Could be Female Owned ;)

On the fourth day of Christmas:

I’m all about supporting small businesses, but when you can DIY a gift I think that’s even better! While visiting my parents this summer I found some old fabric and made a handful of produce bags to gift to my family and a few new ones for my bulk shopping endeavours.

Before you think DIY or sewing and run away, please know that I am by no means an avid sewer. My expertise goes back to I Gr. 11 Fashion class which I took to learn ways to mend the clothing I bought at thrift stores. Basically I wanted to learn how to get a sewing machine to work! But I assure you this is a super simple process and involves about 3 sections of straight sewing! Their are so many available tutorials online so I have linked one here that is super straight-forward and detailed!

Grocery Bags are a key item for a pantry and go far beyond the produce aisle, or even the grocery store! I use my bags for all sorts of things where I would otherwise have used plastic! They are great for travel, storing food in your fridge and packing your lunch! I was recently gifted a few new bags from my friend Erika and was so pleased to receive a gift that is so practical that I use all the time!

When purchased in a store or online they can be pricey and plain! But when you can DIY it and make them with unique fabrics, it’s just so much better! If you are into sewing, you should get to it right away and if not I encourage you to try! You can find a friend with a sewing machine, go to a share library or even just do it by hand with a good old needle and thread!

This is one of the gifts my friends and family will be receiving this year! I am making big sacks to replace wrapping paper (much to my families chagrin) but it’s a great way to reduce your Christmas waste and also so fun to have personalized bags for any goodies you may get!

Happy Sewing!

12 Days To A Clean Christmas: Day 3 Reducing Waste With a Razor!

12 Days to a Clean Christmas.png

On the third day of Christmas…

  • environmental impact

Over the past year I’ve really been working on cutting down on my everyday waste, the simple things that you use each day that create a significant amount of waste. Disposable razors waere on my list and at last I got my hands on one and couldn’t be more pleased! To be honest I was a little bit nervous the first time I used it and most definitely watched a youtube video, but in reality it’s actually so easy to use and is probably the best shave I have ever done! It’s quick easy and you don’t get all that annoying buildup of hair behind the razors.

I think this is such a perfect gift to have on your list for any lady out there! It make shaving so much easier and is way more enviro friendly! Also is it just me or is it so annoying to buy a pack of razors for cheaper than buying more blades for your razor? Silly silly. With this razor you simply remove the blade when you are done with them and can recycle them at specific locations! You can also fly with it and grab a few razors at the drug store rather than having to buy an entire box!

I am not inclined to any specific brand but the one I have which I have been pretty happy with is the Rockwell Razor and it was about 30$ with 6 razors included!

It may seem like a strange gift but it’s an everyday essential that is so perfect for pretty much anyone and helps to reduce a huge amount of waste heading to our landfills!

12 Days To a Clean Christmas: Day 2 The Best Addition To Your Meals!

12 Days to a Clean Christmas (1).png

Day 2: Cold Pressed Extra Virgin Olive Oil

  • Local Small Business

On the second day of Christmas….

Now I don’t like to play favourites but my love for Olive Oil can not be denied. I truly love a good oil, so much so that my sister carried a bottle from Spain all across Europe for me…I make my love known ;)

When it comes to setting up your kitchen, buying a hostess gift or just stepping up your meal prep game, Olive Oil is your best friend. Not only does it add incredible flavour with a light drizzle before serving, it amps up a dressing in an incredible way and it also helps to carry flavours to really bring your recipe together.

Good Olive Oil does not come cheap but I like to think of it as the gift that keeps on giving. Day 2 is devoted to a nice bottle of Olive Oil for all of these reasons. I live near Commercial Drive in Vancouver which is conveniently Little Italy. This means getting my hands on oil isn’t too tricky- if you live in the area try Bosa Foods on Victoria Drive for all your Italian needs!

There are so many varieties out there it can be tough to decide. When selecting Oil as a gift I highly recommend a pure Cold Pressed Extra Virgin Olive Oil. It will go perfectly with a beautiful loaf of sourdough and can be drizzled onto a salad or big bowl of pasta to give it that needed bit of depth. I also love Sunshine Coast Olive Oils, Truffle/Garlic/Wild Mushroom and Sage varieties. A great excuse to stop on my way up the coast! It’s a fun treat to try out all the oils and vinegars and the various combos!

On top of all of these great reasons for buying Olive Oil is of course the health benefits! Olive Oil is an unsaturated fat and is packed with Oleic Acid and Polyphenols(depending on which type you buy) which are a form of antioxidants and a great addition to your diet! Another reason to buy high quality oils!

Also as an added perk you can educate your recipient on caring for your oil. Let them know that Olive Oil doesn’t like heat/air/light so be sure to keep it in a dark place (so don’t store it above your oven!)- most good oils come in dark glass which is very helpful in preventing it from going rancid!

I love to buy oils from Vancouver Olive Oil Company and Sunshine Olive Oil, as you can test out the flavours and the bottles are beautiful and make for the perfect gift! I live across the country from my family and so it’s always nice to give a little piece of the West Coast! Most places have some sort of local Oil company similar to these two and offer a variety of flavours and complimenting Vinegar!

The best part of this gift is you may even reap the benefits at the next dinner party ;)

** I highly recommend buying the little $2 insert for the top of your bottles! It saves on pouring too much at a time, is reusable and ideal for getting the perfect drizzle!

12 Days To A Clean Christmas Day 1: My Favourite Skin Care

12 days to a clean Christmas (1).jpg

Day 1: Miiko Skin Co, Honey Face Wash + Apple Toner

  • Female Owned + Operated

  • Small Business + Local to Vancouver Island

  • Conscious of Environmental Impact

I haven’t always been great about taking care of my skin and having a skin routine always seemed tough, time-consuming and not a priority. That is until my sister showed up with this incredible Miiko Skin Co face wash. I instantly fell in love and actually look forward to my am/pm routine! This wash leaves my face feeling fresh and hydrated without the sticky residue or dryness I’ve experienced in other washes. It’s been over a year and I haven’t looked back and continue to use it daily! Remember I have no sponsors and have no reason to promote the products over the next 12 days. I truly just LOVE them all!

I was recently in Victoria and decided to stop by the Miiko store and was so excited to meet Kimiko the owner and founder. She was absolutely lovely and so passionate about providing a holistic product that was made with ingredients that leave your skin feeling nourished and radiant! Not only does Miiko make incredible products but they also use all natural ingredients and support a low waste system by providing refills! Of course this is for local buyers only, but such an awesome way to avoid more packaging! All products come in glass containers, are beautifully designed and look great on your bathroom counter!

I am not one to promote something that I don’t already use and love and so I am so happy to share this beautiful product. I use the Honey Face Wash and the Apple Toner! I know some may cringe but I had never used a wash or toner consistently. I did the splash water over my face before bed and applied oils, but this was a first for a consistent routine!

The Face Wash is of course made with honey which provides anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties, but keeps the natural oils that our body produces! It is about 30$ a bottle but I have used mine consistently for several months and still have some left! While in Victoria I bought the travel size of the face wash for both Jamie and I to have while on the go! It’s not just a terrific gift for the ladies in your life, but men will love it too! The scent is light and sweet- just like honey and feels nourishing to your skin! If you aren’t into face wash I highly recommend checking out their other products!

If you need a gift for someone who has everything, or is looking to clean up their toiletry bag- check out Miiko Skin Co. Your purchase supports a small business and encourages a clean up of our supply chain withmore opportunities to reduce our packaging footprint!

12 Days To A Clean Christmas

12 days to a clean Christmas (2).jpg

It’s here, the Christmas Season! This year I have created a curated list of a few of my favourite everyday items, some homemade, some from small businesses, in hopes that you can find a gift that leaves you and your recipient feeling inspired!

Gift giving hasn’t always been a huge part of my Christmas experience. Growing up Christian, our family focus hasn’t been on gifts and they were not the highlight of our Christmas morning. Once I reached highschool my family almost entirely threw this concept out the window. We were always guaranteed a curated book selection from my mom and a Terry’s Chocolate Orange, plus a real orange(balance is key), from my dad. Sometimes we would bring in a few other treats like magazines and new socks but a tree full of gifts wasn’t a thing for us. I do remember however, a few years where I only bought second hand gifts with serious intention, such as a giant stuffed Sting Ray for my sister who had been stung the year before ;) It was fun to search out unique gifts that made everyone laugh, or were actually quite useful and second hand- also gave us something fun to open and kept in my very low budget!

Over the years my family has added a few things and with kidlets and spouses joining the family, change is always welcomed. I do have a lot of fun selecting a few key items for my secret santa’s each year and try to buy as conscious as I can , considering where I am spending my money and how I could better my choices in an affordable way! I get it believe me, Amazon is affordable and makes getting gifts across the country much easier! But in case you haven’t heard, it' makes it pretty hard for those smaller producers. As I now officially run a small business, I am truly understanding the work that goes into each and every aspect of operating a business, and many of these small producers depend on Christmas sales!

Gift-giving can be unavoidable with parties and families, so instead of rejecting the idea entirely, I have created a curated list of some of my favourite gift ideas. Each gift had to fit into at least 1 or 2 of my categories

  1. Locally Made/Small Business

  2. Conscious of Environmental Impact

  3. Homemade

  4. Educational or Supportive of a Good Cause

I hope that with this upcoming ‘Clean Christmas’ list, you can discover and be inspired to create some beautiful gifts for your friends and family. And hopefully in the process you can support a small business, educate on a cause you care about, learn a new skill or recipe and of course remember the reason for the season (surprise-it isn’t gift giving).

I call this my ‘Clean Christmas’ list because it’s catchier than ‘list of items that make you think before you buy’ but mainly because the items I am focusing on, encourage us to choose ‘clean’ based on the list above, but really do make us think a little bit before we buy! Each of these gift ideas are items I use daily, hit one of the categories that I consider to make it ‘clean’ and are also USEFUL as in the recipient will actually use this gift and may even create new healthy habits!

Each day over the next 12 days I will be sharing a gift idea that is near and dear to my heart and will support you in whatever your holiday needs are. Whether you are on a budget and want some homemade gift ideas, or are looking for a gift that is practical and will be a welcomed addition to your recipients daily routine, this list has all sorts of great suggestions!

Stay tuned for the next 12 days to discover some fun and fruitful gift ideas! Happy Holidays!

5 Tips For Plant Based Meal Prep

ella-olsson-lMcRyBx4G50-unsplash.jpg

Plant Based meals have been all the rage as of late, and for good reason! Animal proteins put a huge stress on our planet and whether you choose to remove or to simply cut back on consumption, you are doing a favour for both your body and environmental footprint! When we add more plants to our diet we can fill up on high fibre foods in a variety of colours, keeping our plate filled with foods that fuel us!

When it comes to incorporating more plants into your diet it can seem confusing and a bit daunting. But worry not, it’s actually quite a simple process and if you check out my tips below you will be well on your way to planning and diversifying your plant based meals!

1.Macronutrients! Always try incorporating a bit of all the macros, Fat, Protein and Complex Carbohydrates. These will help to make up a design plan for your meals as you look to add a bit of each of these!

Fats: Sliced Avocado, Nuts and Seeds, Drizzle of Quality Olive Oil,

Protein: Tempeh, Pinto Beans, Butter Beans, Red/Yellow/Green Lentils

Carbohydrates: Cruciferous Vegetables (cauliflower, broccoli and Brussel Sprouts), Dark Leafy Greens (Kale, Spinach, Watercress), Bitters (Radicchio, Arugula and Endives)

Complex Carbohydrates: Quinoa, Wheat Berries, Rolled Oats, Legumes, Buckwheat

2. Pantry Stocking, having a few key ingredients stocked in your pantry makes for very easy meal planning! For example tonight I am having a friend for dinner but have a busy day so no time for grocery shopping. Instead I will be making a Lentil Dal as I have all the ingredients available in my pantry! I don’t have a huge walk-in-pantry or a lot of storage in my kitchen (it’s tiny), but that doesn’t mean I can’t keep the necessities stocked! Keep a note on your phone throughout the week of what you need and buy enough for a few weeks by refilling containers and having one area for all the overflow!

3. Diversity! It can be easy to get stuck in a tofu and bean rut, but there are so many other great plant based options to consider. I love to throw red lentils in my pasta sauces, or keep a seed salad dressing in my fridge to add to meals throughout the week! It’s also important to remember that protein can be found in all sorts of plants and so as long as you stick to a diversified diet with all sorts of these plants, you can be sure to get the majority of nutrients you need! I find it inspiring to take a few plant based cookbooks out from the library or do some research on various blogs and cooking accounts- research is all part of the fun of experimenting with plant based cooking!

4. Flavour Profile is so important when it comes to plant based meal prepping. I like to keep a few quality spices in my pantry to be sure that I have the right flavour to add to a dish! Curries are always an excellent go to and can be a warmer flavour using Cardamom, Garam Masala, Cinnamon, or a bit more savoury with spices like Cumin, Turmeric and Ginger. When I make a bowl with grains and greens I rely heavily on a good quality salt and something tangy like nutritional yeast! I highly recommend creating a spice section in your kitchen with refillable jars. This means you can keep your spices easily accessible but also ensures they keep their freshness as you go through them!

5. Think Before You Shop, it’s so important when choosing our produce that we consider where it’s coming from. Whether it’s local, organic or GMO, it’s best to understand what we are buying! I tend to stick to local produce when I can. Supporting farmers in my area and reducing carbon footprint is something that is important to me! I am fortunate to live somewhere that has farmers markets all year long and an unseasonably long growing season. It does mean I try to avoid tropical fruits on a regular basis, but sometimes you just want that papaya. I also tend to buy specific foods Organic. I use the EWG Dirty Dozen Clean 15 list (https://www.ewg.org/foodnews/dirty-dozen.php), as well as choosing highly GMO crops like corn and soya in organic options. It can seem like a lot of misleading and redundant information but by doing your own bit of research and determining what you deem is important is key. An informed decision is always better than an uninformed one!

I hope these tips are helpful in your kitchen and when planning some of your plant based meals!

Crispy Chickpea Toppers

dimitri-photography-LKKl3WFcwzQ-unsplash.jpg

Is there anything better than a crispy crunchy topping on a salad? Whether it’s garlicky croutons, or crispy onions, adding something salty and crunchy can really change a salads game!

I love to make these Crispy Chickpea toppers because they are super quick and often have all the ingredients you need in your pantry! You can switch up whatever spices you like, add salt+pepper, a drizzle of oil and of course chickpeas!

TIP: When preparing the chickpeas I highly recommend drying them off in advance- this helps to make them nice and crispy when you cook them!

These can be done either in the oven or in a pan- I use my cast iron as it creates a nice crispiness. I monitor my electricity usage and find that my oven creates quite the surge and so I try to only use it when I’m cooking a few things at a time. So in the case of making a quick lunch, a pan on your stovetop is easy and just as effective!

Begin by rinsing and drying off the chickpeas. Toss them in a bowl with your chosen seasonings. A few combos I enjoy are:

Salty+Sweet: S+P, Cinnamon, a little honey or maple syrup drizzle and Nutmeg

Curry: S+P, Turmeric and Curry Powder

The Go-To: S+P, Za’atar, Garlic Powder

Spicy: S+P, Smoked Paprika, Cayenne and Onion Powder

Once seasoned, add a drizzle of oil to your baking sheet or pan and toss the Chickpeas to coat. Let them be, so they can cook for about 10-15 minutes and keep checking until they are crispy and still a bit chewy.

Super simple and delicious! I store these chickpeas in a sealed container on my counter for 2-3 days as I find the fridge makes them a bit soggy!

These little poppers are a great protein addition to salad as well as a great source of fibre for a quick snack!

The Tricks I Learned For the Perfect Hummus!

Cooking Dried Chickpeas

Place Dried Chickpeas in a pot of water overnight- add about 1/4tsp of baking soda (this will help to soften them for cooking).

Once ready to cook drain the water, rinse chickpeas add another 1/4 tsp of baking soda and bring to a boil. Once boiled reduce heat and let simmer until soft 1-2 hours depending on how old the chickpeas are (may be more dried out). As these little guys cook away, skim off the white floaty bits from the water.

Once you can squeeze the chickpeas between your finger tips they are done! Be sure to save the water you cooked your chickpeas in! This water is rich with flavour and nutrients and is a perfect addition to soup stock or cooking grains!

Now you have a large pot of chickpeas- what to do with all these chickies??

Hummus

My favourite use for cooked chickpeas is of course hummus. I am serious when I say that from scratch chickpeas make the smoothest and creamiest hummus you will ever try! If you’re feeling extra ambitious you can peel off the skins to your chickpeas- that makes it extra smooth but is a ton of work, I get it!

I prepare my hummus in my food processor with a few simple ingredients

Smooth Tahini, Fresh Lemon Juice, Garlic, Salt (I also reserve a few chickpeas for serving later on!)

Add 1-2 cups of Chickpeas depending on how much you want to make! I really don’t follow any measurements in this recipe, I truly depend on my good old taste buds! Mix the chickpeas up a bit, 2-3, 5 second pulses. Add in a good amount of Tahini, a friend from Israel once told me that traditionally it should be a 1:1 ratio for tahini and chickpeas- so be generous!! Throw in as much garlic as you like, a little lemon zest, lemon juice, salt and if you need some liquid use that beautiful golden broth from cooking the chickpeas!

Serving Hummus

Once your hummus is nice and smooth and hits your personal flavour preference it’s time to serve- which is the really fun part!

I love to serve my hummus in a large shallow bowl or serving plate. I smear it all around, and this is when I add the Oil! Another trick I learned that Oil should be added after mixing, not directly into the hummus. I assume this is related to emulsification and creating a thicker texture- but that’s just a guess! I create a shallow middle section and glug a good amount of oil, which is perfect for dipping! I add in a few whole chickpeas and then sprinkle Za’atar (if you don’t know you should know- it’s awesome and can be found at most Middle Eastern Grocery Stores and most likely some big box stores).

Uses for Hummus

Hummus is such a beautiful and satisfying addition to almost any meal. Outside of serving on platters and as a side dish,It can also be added alongside Shakshuka or eggs for breakfast. An addition to a sandwich or salad at lunch. Or simply used as a snack after school or at work! I also love to use it as a base to a large salad as it adds great flavour, texture and is just really beautiful!

Simple Plain Hummus is also a great base for making other dishes. I like to add beets to give it more color or herbs such as Basil and Dill! I also love this Minimalist Baker recipe for a Caesar Dressing using hummus! It’s so easy and insanely addictive!

The Seeds of Hormonal Health

With busy schedules, late nights and snoozing alarms, breakfast can be the last thing on our mind in the morning, and coffee the first. The thing is, breakfast is such a great meal to pack in much needed fuel for your day and an opportunity to fill your plate, bowl or cup with foods that get you what you need. For women these fats are especially important as they support our hormone health and ensure we are providing our body with the appropriate building blocks.

I find that through my cycle my needs at breakfast can change. As I move through Ovulation and approach PMS I need a fattier more sustaining breakfast that is satiating and filled with good healthy fats. Throughout my Period/Menstruation my appetite changes and a simple smoothie with some ground flax and hemp protein is what my body needs. Whatever it is your body is asking for, be sure to listen and to incorporate a variety of these fats, specifically Essential Fatty Acids- these are the building blocks of our Hormone Health and essential for women throughout their cycle! EFA’s are found in all sorts of nuts and seeds and are a simple addition to our daily meals.

I love to keep a variety of seeds stocked in my pantry and fridge to easily throw into salads, on top of toast, in my oatmeal and ground into my smoothies. They add awesome crunch, fibre and provide a great source of these EFA’s our bodies crave! A few of my favourites are

  • Hemp Seeds, I keep mine in the fridge or freezer for freshness, also Canadian grown and a sustainable crop

  • Flax Seeds , be sure to grind these little guys, otherwise it’s difficult for our body to absorb

  • Pumpkin Seeds, awesome on salads and pretty much anything

  • Chia Seeds, my favourite for making jams and toppers with leftover fruit

  • Sesame, awesome on sweet and savoury foods and even better when toasted!

  • Sunflower Seeds, my go to for making salad dressings, for that creamy texture without the nuts and dairy

Oatmeal to me is the ultimate blank slate for creating a delicious and hearty breakfast. I use rolled oats as they are less processed and still maintain their texture and chewiness! I cook them with nut milk for creaminess, add cinnamon, cardamom and nutmeg and a finely chopped apple. I top them with all sorts of seeds, nut butter (another great healthy fat) and some type of chia jam to add flavour. I often keep these chia jams in my freezer in the winter as a simple addition to my meal!

If you don’t already, I highly recommend adding seeds to your shopping list. They are often quite affordable in bulk sections, or Costco, have a long shelf life and provide women with much needed nutrients!

Anti-Inflammatory Broth

Golden Coconut Broth

As women age and shift through the various stages of their cycle, Inflammation can be a major cause of pain and discomfort. Whether it’s bones and joints or gut irritability, inflammation can be an important factor to consider. Including foods that help to fight inflammation in your diet is a great way to encourage our bodies to heal and thrive!

There are a variety of supplements and tinctures available for easing this type of pain, but with the addition and removal of certain foods we can work towards relieving some discomfort. Turmeric is my favourite food for addressing inflammation, it’s packed with flavour and nutrients! It’s important to note that Turmeric cannot take all the glory when we speak of it’s healing properties, instead the real hero is Curcumin! Curcumin is the active anti-inflammatory compound in Turmeric and also gives the root it’s very yellow colour (be warned when using the root for cooking it will stain anything and everything). Curcumin or just plain old Turmeric comes easily in supplement form and can be taken daily alongside a diet of supportive anti-inflammatory foods.

The recipe I am highlighting today comes from ‘The First Mess’ blog and is absolutely delicious and so essential in our path to reducing our inflammation as well as supporting our immune system! It is packed with Fresh Turmeric and Ginger and the broth base is made from Coconut Milk providing a nice healthy fat to keep us feeling satiated through the day!

I mixed this up a bit and instead of using broccoli, I poured my broth over a bed of steamed Bok Choy. Both of these deep green vegetables are a great source of calcium and fibre which are supportive in providing nutrients to our body and also removing toxins by keeping us nice and regular! I recommend following the step to strain out the floaties as I did not follow suit in my first recipe and it turned out a bit tough to chew!

I highly recommend enjoying this meal on one of these cold dark evenings. It’s warming and grounding and leaves you feeling just the perfect amount of full and nourished.
